Audrey Kathleen Ruston was born on 4 May 1929 in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium. She was known to her family as Adriaantje. Her mother Baroness Ella van Heemstra was a Dutch Nobel Woman. Her father Joseph Victory Anthony Ruston was a British man who belongs to Austria.  Her parents married in September 1926. Hepburn’s childhood was privileged and sheltered. She had to move to different countries due to her father’s job.

Her father left them when she was six. Her parents officially divorced in 1938. Hepburn confessed that her parent’s divorce was the biggest trauma of her life. Her mother moved to the Netherlands after world war II.
