Early Life:

Maryam Nawaz was born on October 28, 1973, in Punjab’s capital. The age of Maryam Nawaz is 50. However, she appears younger than her actual age. She and her father, Nawaz Sharif, are very close. Her father, Nawaz Sharif, was the Chief Minister of Punjab and later the Ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, hence she grew up in a political family.

Education:

Maryam has two brothers, Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, who have settled in London and are running their businesses successfully. She also has a sister named Asma Nawaz Sharif.

Maryam got married to Captain Safdar Awan in 1992 at the age of 19 becoming Maryam Safdar. Safdar Awan, who had served as the security officer of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, retired from the Pakistan Army as a Captain and then worked in civil services as a bureaucrat before entering politics. Maryam has three children, with her son Junaid recently married and her daughters Mahnoor and Mehr-un-Nisa. 

She is known for her impeccable fashion sense and is often spotted wearing traditional Pakistani attire at public events.

Maryam’s uncle, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, served as the Chief Minister of Punjab three times and became the Prime Minister of Pakistan on 11 April 2022. Her first cousin, Mian Muhammad Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, is the Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly.

Political Career:

She announced her plan to get into politics, and Nawaz Sharif authorized it in November 2011. She decided to speak at educational establishments during her run for office about women’s rights and education.

She got into politics in 2012, and in 2013 she was chosen to lead the Prime Minister’s Youth Program. She resigned from her position in 2014 after being embroiled in corruption cases. She was jailed to seven years in prison and a $2 million fine for corruption in the Avenfield case.

She was charged by PTI with stealing money from the government to bolster her own reputation. The federal government was mandated to dismiss her by the Lahore High Court on November 12, 2014. The following day, Maryam gave her resignation as chairperson.

She started getting involved in politics in 2017 after her father, Nawaz Sharif, was found guilty and removed from office by Pakistan’s Supreme Court for his role in the money laundering scandal involving the Panama Papers and his work in the United Arab Emirates. At the by-elections in Constituency NA-120, she ran a campaign for her mother, Kulsoom Nawaz.

In June 2018, she received a PML-N ticket to run in the 2018 general election from the constituencies of PP-173 and NA-127 (Lahore-V). She was found guilty of corruption in the National Accountability Bureau’s Avenfield reference and given a 7-year prison sentence in July. She was thereby prohibited from running for office for ten years. In response, Ali Pervaiz and Malik Irfan Shafi Khokhar were nominated by the PML-N to run in the NA-127 and PP-173 congressional districts, respectively, in the 2018 elections. In her affidavit from 2018, Maryam listed 845 million rupees as the value of her assets. She was found guilty of corruption, but the Islamabad High Court overturned the decision on September 29, 2022, making her eligible to run for office.

In connection with the Chaudhry Sugar Mills corruption allegations, she was taken into custody by the National Accountability Bureau Lahore on August 8, 2019. For the Chaudhry Sugar Mills Corruption allegations, she was granted bail by the Lahore High Court in November 2019.

On January 3, 2023, Maryam Nawaz was appointed senior vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). President of the party Shehbaz Sharif gave his approval to the choice. Records found by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists listed Maryam as the proprietor of the British Virgin Islands-based companies Nielsen Enterprises Limited and Nescoll Limited, as well as allegedly the proprietor of the properties in the United Kingdom owned jointly by her brothers. Maryam responded by denying owning any businesses or properties outside of Pakistan and asserting, “My brother has appointed me a trustee in one of his firms which only authorizes me to deliver assets to my brother Hussain’s family/children if necessary.”

Audio leaks:

Maryam Nawaz’s audio recordings have been released numerous times throughout the years.
