The birthplace and date of Anne Hathaway are both November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York City. Her father, a labor lawyer named Gerald, is her biological father. Her mother, actress Kate McCauley, raised her. Anne Hathaway is the second child of her parents, and she grew up with two brothers. Her family decided to relocate to Millburn, New Jersey when she was six.

She grew up seeing her mother play Fantine in the drama Les Miserables on stage. Acting appealed to her as a result. However, her parents forbade her from acting, and her mother quit the industry to raise her and her brothers.

Anne Hathaway attended the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. She then finished her high school coursework at Millburn. She participated in athletics and stage acting as required by her school.
