Humphrey DeForest Bogart was an American Film and stage actor. In 1999 the American Film Institute selected him as the greatest male star of classic American Cinema. Humphrey Bogart made his acting debut in motion pictures with  Up the River. After his first debut, he appeared in supporting roles. Bogart received positive reviews for his performance as a gangster in Babyface. Bogart was delivered remarkable movies in order.

Bogart’s performances in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and In a Lonely Place are considered his best performances. He became a cult hero in American cinema. Bogart was a heavy smoker and drinker and died of oesophagal cancer in January 1957.

Humphrey Bogart Early Life:

Humphrey Bogart, a legendary actor, was commonly reported to be around 173 cm tall. He was born on Christmas Day 1899 in New York City. The date of Bogart’s birth has been disputed. His father, Belmont DeForest Bogart,  was a Cardiopulmonary surgeon. His mother, Maud, was a commercial illustrator and received art training in New York and France.  

She later became the art director of the fashion magazine The Delineator. Bogart’s parents were busy in their careers. They showed little emotion towards their children. Bogart recalled that he was brought very unsentimentally but straightforwardly.

Education:

Humphrey Bogart attended the private Delancy School until his 5th grade. He then attended the prestigious Trinity School. Bogart was an indifferent student who showed no interest in extra-curricular activities. Bogart later got admission to a boarding school Phillips Academy. He left Phillips in 1918 after one semester.

It is assumed he was expelled for throwing the headmaster in a Rabbit pond on campus. Other reasons for the expulsion were smoking, drinking, poor academic performance, and inappropriate conduct with staff.

Humphrey Bogart Career:

His parents were very disappointed by his bad performance in college. They were worried about his future. Instead of attending different schools or looking for any civilian job, Bogart enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1918.

Military Services:

With no career options, Bogart joined the Navy in the spring of 1918 during World War I and served as a coxswain. Bogart was recorded as a model sailor who spent most of his sea time after the armistice ferrying troops back from Europe. Bogart left the service on June 18, 1919, at the rank of Boatswain’s mate Third Class. He attempted to enlist in the Navy again during World War II. But he was rejected this time due to his age.

Acting Career:

After his Naval service, Bogart worked as a shipper and a bond salesman. He resumed his friendship with Bill Brady Jr. and obtained an office job with William A. Brady’s new World Film Company. He made his first stage as a Japanese Butler in the play Drifting. 

In 1934, he starred in Broadway play Invitation to a Murder. After his minor roles in stage and film, he had a breakthrough role in The Petrified Forest in 1936 from Warner Bros.

Relationships:

Bogart was married four times during his life. He married his first wife, Helen Menken, in 1926. They divorced after less than a year of their marriage. In 1928, he married another actress Mary Phillips. They divorced when he moved from New York to Hollywood. He married a third time to Mayo Methot in 1938, and they got separated in 1945.

After two weeks after his third divorce, he married Lauran Bacall. She was her costar in To Have and Had Not. She was extraordinarily young and beautiful. They had two children together. Bogart and Bacall remained together until his death.

Cause of Death:

Bogart was a heavy smoker and drinker. In 1955, his health was failing. He had developed esophageal cancer. He died on January 14, 1957, at the age of 57.

He was awarded by Academy Award For Best Actor In Leading Role in 1921, which was received by Will Smith.
