Sir Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis was born on 29 April 1957 in the Kensington district of London. His father, Cecil Day-Lewis, was a poet. He was born to his second wife, Jill Balcon, who was a famous actress. His maternal grandfather Sir Michael Balcon was the head of Ealing Studios. The BAFTA for Outstanding Contributions to British Cinema is given in his honor.
After two years of Day-Lewis’s birth, his family moved to Crooms Hills in Greenwich. At school, he was bullied for being Jewish and Posh. At a younger age, he indulged in minor crimes like shoplifting.

In 1968, his parents recognized his wild attitude and sent him as a boarder to Sevenoaks School in Kent. In school, he learned fishing, acting, and wood cutting. After two years, he was sent to another school Bedales in Petersfield, Hampshire.
