Rise of Prime Time and Ravish Ki Report (2000s–2010s)
Kumar hosted several NDTV India programmes, including Prime Time, Hum Log, Ravish Ki Report and Des Ki Baat. Ravish Ki Report was a field-reporting show. Prime Time became his signature programme and, as senior executive editor, he became one of the channel’s best-known faces.

Controversies and Criticism
Kumar is a polarising figure in Indian media. His supporters and critics describe his work very differently, and both accounts are summarised here.
Criticism. Right-leaning outlets such as OpIndia, Swarajya and Organiser have accused him of selective outrage and of aligning with opposition parties, mainly the Congress. Their pieces are opinion commentary, not news reporting. In a November 2024 video, “Murjha Gaya Middle Class,” he criticised India’s middle class, and OpIndia described the video as an unfair attack on it.
Supporters and institutional recognition. Bodies such as the Magsaysay Foundation and the VUB/ULB universities have honoured his work. Kumar himself has described Indian television media as having largely surrendered its independence. He popularised the term “Godi Media” for channels he sees as pro-government.
The Pawan Khera and Himanta Biswa Sarma Episode (April 2026)
In April 2026, Congress leader Pawan Khera made allegations against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Khera alleged she held multiple foreign passports and foreign assets, and both Sarmas rejected the claims as malicious, fabricated and politically motivated. An FIR was then registered against Khera in Guwahati. The Telangana High Court granted him transit anticipatory bail on 10 April 2026, and the Supreme Court stayed that order on 15 April.
Kumar commented in a video, questioning why the police were pursuing the accuser instead of the allegations being answered or investigated. OpIndia responded that he had ignored key facts and defended Khera. Organiser said the FIR was itself the first step of an investigation. The underlying case is a legal dispute.
