Who Is Arshad Sharif?
Arshad Sharif built his reputation over roughly three decades as a reporter, bureau chief, news director and anchor. He specialised in defence and foreign affairs and covered conflict in the tribal areas. Controversies
The Shahbaz Gill Interview and Sedition Cases
On 8 August 2022, ARY aired Sharif’s interview with PTI leader Shahbaz Gill. The authorities alleged that Gill called on armed forces members to mutiny. Both men denied that. ARY was ordered off air on 9 August. On 10 August a case alleging sedition, abetting mutiny and conspiracy was registered against Sharif and colleagues. The FIR also named ARY’s CEO Salman Iqbal, its head of news Ammad Yousaf and anchor Khawar Ghumman. The Interior Ministry cancelled the channel’s no-objection certificate, citing “adverse reports from agencies.”
His widow says he faced 16 police cases across Pakistan. ARY announced on 31 August that it was parting ways with him. The later fact-finding team said it received copies of only nine of those cases. Exile in Dubai and Kenya
At a joint press conference in October 2022, Pakistan’s army media wing questioned the circumstances of his departure. It said an ARY manager had booked his Dubai ticket and that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa officials escorted him at Peshawar airport on 10 August.
According to the Columbia database’s summary, the UAE denied his residency application, and he arrived in Nairobi on 20 August 2022. He was living in self-imposed exile there when he was killed.
The Killing in Kenya (23 October 2022)
Sharif was shot dead by police in Kajiado County, about 80 kilometres south of Nairobi. Kenyan police called it “mistaken identity” and expressed regret. They said officers were looking for a similar vehicle after a checkpoint was not stopped at. Accounts of the crime police were investigating vary: child abduction, a carjacking, or a stolen Mercedes Sprinter van.

- Pakistan’s fact-finding team. A team of Pakistani investigators said in December 2022 that the killing was a “planned assassination.” The report questioned the account of Khurram Ahmed, who was driving the vehicle, and raised doubts about ARY’s timelines. It also noted discrepancies in the statements of Kenyan officers. ARY reported that its CEO Salman Iqbal said the report lacked facts.
- The FIR. An FIR at Islamabad’s Ramna Police Station named Waqar Ahmed, Khurram Ahmed and Tariq Ahmed Wasi.
- His mother’s allegations. In a letter to the Chief Justice, Sharif’s mother accused a number of senior military and intelligence figures. These allegations have not been tested in any court.
- Kenyan courts. The Kenyan rulings centre on whether the shooting was lawful and whether it was properly investigated. Kenyan authorities’ own account remains “mistaken identity.”
Court Proceedings in Kenya
His family lodged a case in Kenya’s High Court in October 2023. In July 2024, Justice Stella Mutuku found the killing unlawful and criticised the authorities’ failure to investigate promptly and independently. The High Court awarded KES 10 million in damages and directed agencies to complete investigations and act, including with prosecution if warranted. In July 2025 the Court of Appeal upheld the right-to-life finding but said the police oversight body had met its investigative mandate.
On 3 July 2026, Kenya’s Supreme Court dismissed a final appeal by widow Javeria Siddique and two Kenyan press bodies. A five-judge bench rejected requests to compel prosecution, order a public apology, release investigation records and increase compensation. It said prosecution decisions belong to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The court declined to call the killing torture.
Court Proceedings in Pakistan
Pakistan’s Supreme Court took suo motu notice in December 2022. The proceedings were later transferred to the Federal Constitutional Court. In March 2025 the government asked for more time to ratify a mutual legal assistance agreement with Kenya. In February 2026 the Federal Constitutional Court disposed of the case, saying that with the agreement signed and diplomatic coordination under way, no judicial interference was needed. Javeria Siddique said she was disappointed and called it a black day. A Columbia University database lists the decision date as 14 January 2026, while Arab News reported it on 3–4 February.
