Sagarika Ghose Early Life and Family

Sagarika Ghose was born in New Delhi on 8 November 1964 into a family with a long record in public service. Her father, Bhaskar Ghose, was an Indian Administrative Service officer who served as Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and as Director General of Doordarshan.

Her aunts include Arundhati Ghose, a former diplomat and ambassador, and Ruma Pal, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of India. Her cousin, the social worker Sanjay Ghose, was abducted and killed by the militant group ULFA in Assam in 1997. Her maternal great-grandfather, Dr K.S. Ray, was a renowned Bengal surgeon and a founder of the TB Hospital in Jadavpur, Kolkata.

She became a prime-time anchor on BBC World’s Question Time India. She later became deputy editor and anchor at CNN-IBN, the English news network co-founded by her husband, Rajdeep Sardesai. Her televised Twitter interview with Mamata Banerjee and students, from which Banerjee famously walked out, won the 2013 NT Award for Best Public Debate Show. Entry into politics (2024)

On 11 February 2024 the TMC announced Ghose as a Rajya Sabha candidate, along with Sushmita Dev, Mamata Bala Thakur and Nadimul Haque. Some commentators questioned a prominent journalist accepting a party nomination. Ghose said she was inspired by Mamata Banerjee’s courage.

She took her seat for West Bengal in April 2024, succeeding Abir Biswas. In February 2025 she introduced a private member’s bill, a Constitution (Amendment) Bill on the Seventh Schedule, which is still pending. PRS Legislative Research’s tracker shows 95% attendance and 106 debates for her.

Sagarika Ghose Controversies

Ghose is a polarising figure. Her supporters see a principled critic of the ruling party, while critics accuse her of partisanship. The documented episodes are below.

  • CNN-IBN Sri Sri Ravi Shankar video: A segment was edited so that his earlier statements appeared as answers to her live questions. She first cited “technical issues,” then she and the channel issued a formal apology.
  • 2014 mosque tweet: She wrote that she would like to see the incoming Prime Minister visit a mosque, which drew heavy online criticism. She said she meant a “sub-continental spirituality of shared shrines.”
  • 2017 lynching tweet: She asked the government to act against those behind the killings of Muslims. After heavy trolling she deleted the tweet and apologised for hurting sentiments, and she replied that she hoped an FIR would also be filed against the killers. Later in 2017, Delhi Police registered an FIR against a man who posted an online threat against her and four others.
  • April 2026 WhatsApp post: On 16 April 2026 she deleted a post that alleged a reporter had sent her a “highly objectionable” WhatsApp message. She said she didn’t want to personalise the matter. Some users questioned her claim and the decision to name the journalist.
  • 2024 nomination: Critics, including some media commentators, questioned a veteran journalist accepting a party Rajya Sabha seat. The TMC defended the nomination.

Sagarika Ghose Net Worth

Ghose has no confirmed net worth figure. The best documented numbers come from her February 2024 Rajya Sabha nomination affidavit, as reported by Indian outlets. These are self-declared and may have changed.

  • Immovable assets: about Rs 49 crore, mainly a Panchsheel Park, New Delhi home bought in 2008 and registered in her name. The “paper value” was estimated at about Rs 49 crore against an original value of roughly Rs 25 crore.
  • Movable assets: about Rs 3 crore.
  • Her income: about Rs 40 lakh in 2019, Rs 10 lakh in 2021 and Rs 17 lakh in 2023.
  • Her husband’s declared holdings: about Rs 24.87 crore in movable assets, with income of about Rs 3.54 crore in 2023.

One outlet put the couple’s combined assets at nearly Rs 75 crore. This is an estimate based on the affidavit, not a verified net worth.

Sagarika Ghose Personal Life

Ghose is married to journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, the son of former Indian Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai. They have two children, a son, Ishan, who is an ENT surgeon, and a daughter, Tarini. Ghose has said she has faced heavy abuse and trolling online, and that she once held back from posting out of concern for her daughter’s safety.

Sagarika Ghose in 2026

2026 has been the most turbulent year of her political career.

The Bengal election and the TMC split. The TMC lost the West Bengal Assembly election in a result announced on 4 May 2026. Ghose alleged a delay in vote counting that day. The BJP formed the government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The TMC then split. By mid-June, reports said about 58 MLAs under Ritabrata Banerjee and around 20 Lok Sabha MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar had rebelled, and three Rajya Sabha MPs had resigned.

Her stance. Ghose reaffirmed loyalty to Mamata Banerjee and criticised those switching sides. She posted that the party had divided into “gaddars” (traitors) and loyalists, and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar hit back sharply. On 14 June she argued on X that the anti-defection law gives no legal basis for a “separate group” inside the House. The rebels dispute the framing and say they represent the real party.

Party identity. On 17–18 September the Election Commission froze the name “All India Trinamool Congress” and its symbol. It allotted “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” (symbol: football player) to Banerjee’s faction and “Democratic Trinamool Congress” (symbol: envelope) to the rival faction. Banerjee has challenged the freeze in the Supreme Court, and the larger dispute is still pending.

Parliament and activism.

  • In July 2026 she gave a Rule 267 notice in the Rajya Sabha seeking a discussion on alleged use of excessive force against student protesters over exam irregularities. She said the Prime Minister and Home Minister should apologise. Delhi Police denied using pellet guns, and the CRPF had not publicly responded.
  • In October 2026 she wrote in The Indian Express about opposition protests over the Election Commission and the SIR (Special Intensive Revision), arguing that the “fear factor” was being challenged.
  • In October 2026 she led a three-member TMC fact-finding team to Christian institutions in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipur. She alleged intimidation of Christians, and she did not specify whether police complaints had been filed in every case.
