Pakistan Set to Launch New Currency Notes in 2026: Modern Designs, Better Security, and Phased Rollout

Islamabad, February 20, 2026 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is moving forward with plans to introduce newly designed Pakistani currency notes this year. This big update aims to make Pakistan’s money safer, more modern, and harder to fake. The new Pakistani currency will feature advanced security features, fresh looks, and themes that show Pakistan’s culture, history, and future goals.

Why Is Pakistan Getting New Currency Notes?

The SBP has been working on this for a while to fight fake money and bring Pakistan’s notes up to global standards. Old notes have been around for years, and counterfeiting has become a problem. The new series will help reduce fraud and make transactions safer for everyone.

SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad confirmed in recent updates that the designs are ready. Printing is at an advanced stage, and the bank will start producing notes soon after getting final approval from the federal cabinet.

Which Notes Will Change?

The main focus is on popular denominations:

  • Rs 100
  • Rs 500
  • Rs 1,000
  • Rs 5,000

Some reports also mention updates for lower notes like Rs 10, Rs 20, and Rs 50 in the full series. The Rs 5,000 note will stay in use – no plans to remove it.

The rollout will be phased (step by step). Old notes will remain valid for a long time while new ones slowly enter the market. The value of the rupee stays the same – no change in how much money is worth.

What Makes the New Notes Special?

  • Advanced security features: Better threads, special inks, and other tech to stop fake notes.
  • Modern designs: New artwork showing Pakistan’s landmarks, diversity, women’s role in society, climate change awareness, and historical heritage.
  • Possible polymer notes: Some talks about trying plastic (polymer) notes for extra durability and security – maybe starting as a test.

The SBP started this with an art competition in 2024 to get fresh ideas. Now, the board has approved the final designs and sent them for government okay.

When Will the New Currency Hit the Market?

Printing could start very soon (after cabinet approval). New notes are expected in circulation by the end of 2026 (November–December) or early 2027.

SBP plans to print 2–3 denominations at once and build enough stock first. This way, the change happens smoothly without confusing people or shops.

What About Fake News and Rumors?

Many viral images and videos of “new notes” are not official – SBP has warned against them. Also, rumors about scrapping the Rs 5,000 note or sudden bans are false. Old notes will work normally during the transition.

Experts say this is a positive step for Pakistan’s economy. It shows the government and SBP are serious about modernizing money and protecting people’s savings.

What People Are Saying

Many Pakistanis are excited about the fresh look and better security. On social media, people are sharing thoughts like “Finally, modern currency!” and “Hope it stops fake notes.” Some worry about the change process, but SBP promises it will be easy and gradual.

Stay tuned to official SBP announcements for exact launch dates and pictures of the new notes. This update is part of Pakistan’s bigger plan to strengthen its financial system in 2026.
