Who Is Rahul Shivshankar?

Rahul Shivshankar is one of the best-known English-language news personalities in India. His career runs through several major newsrooms: the Times of India, Headlines Today, NewsX, Times Now and now Network18. He describes himself as a “progressive–conservative” journalist.

He is also an author and columnist. As Times Now editor-in-chief, he interviewed figures including Narendra Modi, Benjamin Netanyahu, Boris Johnson, Bill Gates, Hillary Clinton, Mike Pompeo and Anthony Fauci. Supporters see a sharp, high-energy interrogator. Critics, including media watchdogs, have questioned the accuracy and tone of some of his broadcasts. Both views are covered below.

Early Life & Family

Very little verified information about his childhood is public. Reliable sources give his date of birth, but we could not find a confirmed birthplace, or details about his parents and siblings.

On his personal life, the Penguin author biography says he is married to an American multimedia journalist and communications specialist, and that they have two children. The same biography says he considers parenting the most important job he will hold.

Education

Some websites list specific institutions, but none we found cited a primary source, so we are not publishing them. Please check his own interviews or a Network18 profile before adding this section.

Career

Early Career: Print Journalism (Mid-1990s to 2003)

He began as a reporter with the Times of India, where he became one of the youngest leader writers (editorial writers) at the paper.

Headlines Today and the 2008 Mumbai Attacks

He was part of the launch team of Headlines Today in 2003, later took the lead-writer role, and then led its newsroom as executive editor. Wikipedia also says he worked “very briefly” at Headlines Today, which sits awkwardly with that timeline. The sources conflict, so the exact length of his stay is unclear. He was praised for his coverage of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

NewsX (2013–2016)

In 2013 he became editor-in-chief of NewsX, and the channel won the ENBA award for Best English News Channel of the Year in 2014. At NewsX he presented the shows Nation@9 and Insight.

Times Now (2016–2023)

In 2016 he joined Times Now as editor-in-chief, replacing Arnab Goswami. He had earlier been part of the team that launched the channel. Times Network named him editorial director in 2021. His shows included:

  • India Upfront, which won Best Primetime Show (English) at the ENBA Awards (sources differ on whether this was the 2020 or 2021 edition)
  • Confront, a weekend debate show that began in 2018
  • The Breaking News Show and Live Report

He quit Times Now in June 2023. The channel’s internal note said only that he had decided to part ways with the network. No public reason was given.

Network18 and CNN-News18 (2023–Present)

In September 2023 Network18 announced he would join as a consulting editor. He went on to anchor The Hard Facts, the channel’s 9 pm primetime show.

In December 2025, CNN-News18 named him Editorial Affairs Director as Zakka Jacob moved to an on-air role. Every team at the channel (input, output, production and off-platform) now reports to him.

Some online profiles, including Wikipedia, list him as “editor-in-chief” of CNN-News18. Network18’s own announcements use the titles consulting editor (2023) and editorial affairs director (December 2025).

Author and Columnist

Modi and India: 2024 and the Battle for Bharat is his book, co-written with Siddhartha Talya and published by Penguin. The Times of India reviewed it in December 2023. He writes for Open Magazine, where 2026 pieces include columns on Narendra Modi and the Sangh’s ideology (June), the BJP’s coalition-building (May) and China’s attitude to nature and the Brahmaputra (September).

Controversies

Coverage of Rahul Shivshankar is divided. Network18 has called him an “archetypal journalist” with a strong record of leading newsrooms. Media critics and some political figures have challenged individual broadcasts and posts. What follows is what is documented.

The “I Am Mr McAdams” Clip (March 2022)

During a Times Now debate on the Ukraine war, he berated Bohdan Nahaylo of the Kyiv Post, believing him to be Daniel McAdams of the Ron Paul Institute. McAdams eventually interrupted to say he had not yet spoken, and the clip became an internet meme. The BBC and Pakistani outlets such as The Express Tribune reported it widely.

Fact-Check Criticism

Newslaundry reported in 2022 that he had earlier treated a WhatsApp forward as a list of Chinese soldiers killed in the Galwan clash. After the November 2025 Delhi blasts, Newslaundry criticised his on-air remark that “terror has a religion” as coded communal messaging.

2018 “Troll Army” Segment

In April 2018 an India Upfront segment named Twitter handles as part of a “troll army”. One named user, Riyaz Ahmed, said he lost his job as a result and denied the claim.

Defamation Matters (2020–2021)

  • Journalist Kanchan Srivastava filed a ₹5 crore defamation suit in 2020 against Shivshankar and Times Now’s managing director, over an India Upfront segment labelling her part of the “Rhea lobby”. Newslaundry reported it as a defamation notice.
  • TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee lodged a case over an audiotape aired on Times Now; the Calcutta High Court in 2021 directed Shivshankar to appear by video link.

Karnataka FIR, Quashed (March 2025)

A “hate speech” case was filed after his X post about Karnataka’s allocation of funds for religious minorities. The Karnataka High Court quashed it. Justice M Nagaprasanna ruled on 17 March 2025. His counsel argued the post only reported budget figures and that he was being targeted over a TV show on the MUDA scam. The state had argued the post promoted enmity between religious groups. The court’s earlier interim observation was that the post did not meet the legal threshold for the offence of promoting enmity.
